We had almost no common language for the first four months. Google Translate, a lot of hand gestures, a lot of laughing at confusion. Somehow that was some of the most genuine communication I’ve had in a relationship. You can’t hide behind words when you barely have any.

The language gap forced me to pay attention to everything else — how she moved, how she treated people, what she did when she thought no one was watching. You learn a lot about someone when words aren’t available. She learned English fast because she wanted to. That told me something too.
