The first shock was how much appearance matters to her — and how much she expects you to notice hers. Showing up in jeans to a dinner she spent three hours getting ready for is not received well. I had to completely update my idea of what ‘making an effort’ means.

Also, humor is different. Sarcasm and dark jokes are more common than I expected, so I had to adjust and not take everything so seriously.
