The warmth is completely real. Filipinas are genuinely some of the kindest, most hospitable women I’ve encountered anywhere in the world. But there’s also a ‘hiya’ culture — avoiding conflict to preserve harmony — that means she’ll say she’s fine when she isn’t. Learning to read that takes time.

We used voice messages a lot because text sometimes couldn’t carry how stressed she was. Hearing each other made the distance and the whole war context a bit easier to handle.
